Strength of schedule
A measure of how difficult the opponents a team has faced, or will face, actually are.
Strength of schedule aggregates opponent ratings across a set of games, either games already played (backward looking, used to interpret a record) or games remaining (forward looking, used in season simulations).
It is the reason two teams with identical records can carry very different projections. In college football especially, where scheduling is highly uneven, schedule adjustment often matters more than raw results.
Forward-looking schedule strength feeds directly into playoff and championship simulations, which resimulate every remaining game many thousands of times.
